Forever a marching band geek, and I love it. :)
Whenever I am creating a playlist to run to, I have to make sure each song I add has a quick enough BPM (beats per minute) that I can keep time with the song, but not so quick that I end up running my little legs off trying to stay in step. :)

Healthy and the holidays
(So this is late- but I thought I had already posted this one. :) My bad.)
Let's face it- eating healthy during the holidays can be REALLY challenging. That sentence feels like a huge understatement.
There are goodies, sweets, and treats lurking around every corner. People make cookies and baked goods, give them as gifts, leave them for coworkers...it is impossible to avoid Christmas treats.
I'll admit- I did not do as well at saying "no thank you" to all of the sweet temptations that Christmas brought as I could have. It didn't help that I was PMSing as well. (Thanks Mother Nature!!) I know y'all wanted to know that. ;)
It was pretty cool, though. Yes, I indulged in chocolatey goodness. Yes, Instead of just having a "taste" of said chocolate, I wolfed down more than my fair share. ;) But you know what? It made me feel AWFUL! (Doesn't sound cool- let me explain. :))
Now for the cool part- I can actually feel a difference between eating healthy and eating junk!! My body isn't used to junk anymore! So much so, that when I do eat it, I feel yucky!
I was tired, irritable, bloated and incredibly uncomfortable. I'm starting to recognize what junk does to me, and realize that it's just not worth it! Now, THAT my friends, is progress. ;)

Ever have to ice your butt after a squat-intensive workout? Yeah, that just happened. :) You're welcome.

Progress
Bodycombat kicked my tail again today. :) Lots of lunges, (I didn't tip over this time- so that's fun. :)) jacks, and PUNCHIN! lol
I love this class cause it makes me feel tough. It's anger and frustration release, and I love seeing the progress in my stamina.
My sciatica was full force tonight. I'd kick and when I dropped down into a squat or lunge it would lock up. :/ Still trying to figure out how to push through the pain, or if I need to do something different to work it out before and after. My foam roller helps, but I really need to make it a point to do it every single day.
My feet also cramped up about ten minutes into the workout. They always do that in this class, but not usually that quickly. It's SO frustrating, cause I have to lower my intensity by not bouncing or doing jacks to stop the cramping. :/ It honestly feels like Charlie horses in my feet!
I know workouts are supposed to hurt. They're supposed to burn and make you feel like you might die a little. :) I'm still in the stage where I'm figuring out good pain vs bad pain, and what to work through as opposed to stopping and working it out. I'll get there!
All in all it was a good workout, despite my feet and lower back trying to kill me. :)

Zumba today
PHEW! Zumba was intense!
Weird workout thing: my lazy eye is VERY noticeable if I watch myself in the mirror while Zumba-ing. Weird.
I can feel a big difference in my stamina and endurance in the class! It's very exciting.
I need to make it a point to use my foam roller EVERY. DAY. My sciatica was full force today. :/ When I roll it out the night before, I barely notice it when I work out. Shame on me for not doing it last night. :P
I have never sweat more in my LIFE!

Cheese and carbs, please? :)
Pizza and Mac-n-cheese (gotta be the blue box!!) PLEASE?!!
I have been craving both of these for about a week! Currently looking for a healthy/carb free version of either of these.
No idea where these cravings are coming from. Possibly hormonal. I've been eating plenty, every 2-3 hrs, but I have seriously been having dreams about pizza. I can imagine what it'd taste like to eat a gigantic bowl of Mac-n-cheese. :(
I've done we'll avoiding it this far. If anyone eats a slice of pizza in front of me though...you're goin down. ;)

My favorite workouts :)
Since starting back to the gym, I wanted to make sure to take a wide variety of classes. This way, I can keep it fresh and fun, while working different muscle groups.
Here's a list of classes I've been taking, what muscle group they work out best (for me), and what I like/don't like about each class. :)
Bodypump- This class is cardio + weightlifting. It's an hour long, and targets one muscle group per song, working out the entire body! I REALLY feel it in my thighs and triceps. I love how much stronger I've been feeling after taking it. It's made a big difference in my thighs (TONS of squats and lunges. :/ lol) The only thing I don't like with this class is that they do the an track last. My whole body is already exhausted by that point, and I don't feel like my abs get a good workout because I'm already so tired.
Zumba- This has to be my favorite class! I look forward to it all week! It's cardio on crack. This is one of the only classes that my abs are sore afterwards. I come out of that class sweatin like a big dog! I can't think of anything I don't like about this class. :) It's fun, really tough, and a fantastic workout!
Bodycombat- This is another super tough class! It's basically a cardio kickboxing class set to music. It's also another really fun one! My arms get the biggest workout from this one, but it is most definitely a total body workout. The class is GREAT for stress release, and I always feel like a tough cookie after I'm done. :) The only thing I don't like about the class right now is that I can't keep up yet! lol There are quite a few times I have to pause during each track.
Yoga- I have never really been a huge fan of yoga. It didn't seem like it would have much benefit for me. I was definitely wrong! This class helps my strength, balance, and loosens up my muscles. I've found that incorporating yoga into my routine has made me significantly less sore and able to push myself a lot harder during my other workouts.
CSI- (Stands for cardio strength interval) I have to say it...I hate this class. lol It's the shortest class I take (only 30-45 min) but holy cow is it hard! It's circuit training (I think that's what it's called) and you only do each part (squats, planks, etc) for 30 seconds, then switch to the next one. That makes it nice, because by the end of each 30 seconds I am READY to switch! I only hate this class right now because I have the hardest time keeping up! :) Mountain climbers, pikes and planks on the balance ball, squats... It beats me up. :) It is a great cardio workout, as well as strengthening. I feel this class working everywhere.
Though I don't think it's necessary to take classes to lose weight, it helps me a lot. I push myself a lot harder in classes, enjoy the group setting, and love how encouraging and supportive the instructors are. I would definitely recommend any of these classes! I was told in the beginning to take each class three times before deciding whether or not you'd like to continue, so that you can get the hang of it and give it a chance. I'd definitely recommend that as well. The first class can be confusing, as you're figuring out what the terms and moves are, the second class you're starting to get the hang of it, and by the third class you can get a better understanding as to whether the class is for you. :)
Give em a shot!!

Bodycombat
I always go into bodycombat thinking I'm going to kick some tail, and yet it always kicks mine. ;)
I absolutely love this class! It is REALLY hard. It's similar to Zumba in that it is choreographed moves to music, only instead of dancing it's kickboxing. The first time I took bodycombat, I thought I might throw up! (My BIGGEST fear in working out!) I was breathing hard, my muscles were screaming, and the instructor says, "Ok- that was a great warm-up! Are you guys ready to work now?!" And the rest of the class yells, "WOOOOO!!!" I'm sure I would have wooed too, but gasping for air doesn't really make it possible to woo.
I learned quickly to take it easy in the beginning of each song, then push hard at the end, or I will be sorry! :) I can already see my endurance improving!
I love this class! Maybe I'm just a sucker for punishment, ;) but this is definitely a class that packs a punch! (I'm so cheesy.)

Stretch
Confession: I've always thought stretching was a waste of time.
I would stretch a little before the class started, then do the "cool down" stretches at the end of whatever class I was taking, but never really felt any difference. I was still so incredibly sore I couldn't take the stairs and had a hard time sitting down. I still couldn't lift my arms over my head without some bizarre "uhhhhhhhhggg" slipping out of my mouth. Once, I was SO sore I couldn't lift my left hand above my belly button!
In my attempts to skinny-down in the past I've worked way too hard too fast. I became so sore I couldn't move, preventing myself from continuing working out.
This time, along with not pushing myself beyond what I can handle (slow and steady lets you sit down on the toilet without crying), I've also started stretching before and after my workouts at home. This loosens me up prior to working out, allowing me to push harder and see progress quicker. Stretching after helps me be able to move the next day. :)
I've found the stretches at the gym are OK, but they just aren't enough for me.
At home, I now use a foam roller (more to come with my new focus foam roller love affair) on my body, and a tennis ball on my feet. This has been AWESOME and has really helped my soreness.
So- if you're workin out, stretch it out. You'll thank me later. ;)

I don't wanna
Last week, I REALLY didn't want to go to the gym.
I had a long week of a lot of work and not much sleep. I was frustrated and tired, and a little cranky too. (I know! Me? Cranky?! Ha ha ha)
I went to bed at 0800 (I worked the night before) swearing I was just going to sleep until I woke up naturally, and wasn't going to worry about the gym. I made excuse after excuse as to why there wouldn't any benefit to going to the gym when I work out.
"It would just make me more tired if I haven't rested enough."
"I couldn't give 100% if I'm already tired going into the workout."
"I won't be able to catch up on sleep if I wake up to go to the gym."
Blah blah blah....
Now, I do now there are times to listen to your body and rest. Now wasn't one of those times.
I didn't set an alarm, yet conveniently woke up early enough to go. Despite some hard core procrastinating, I still had time to eat a good breakfast, get ready, and get to the gym early enough to go on the treadmill to warm up before bodypump. Clearly, no matter what I did to avoid it, I was supposed to work out that day.
After warming up, I went into the class to set up, only to see that the instructor I don't exactly care for was teaching the class. :/ Seeing how I didn't want to work out in the first place, I was seriously tempted to pretend I forgot something and walk right back out.
I decided to suck it up and just do it. I'm SO glad I did. It was one of the best workouts I have had so far. I felt stronger and had more endurance than I had before. I was able to last a lot longer before taking a break than I had ever before in bodypump! It was pretty fantastic.
I honestly believe it was a little gift from God for sucking it up and dragging my tail in there despite desperately trying to avoid it. :) I love when He does that.
It's also been a little reminder to me on days since that I haven't felt like going. I am able to remember that time where I was really glad I went after REALLY not wanting to work out.
In the past, if I've even given myself the possibility of not going to the gym, it's over. I will not be going that day. It's cool to see a little progress regarding my mental strength too! :)

Thanksgiving
I didn't feel right about talking about how I kicked buns at eating right on Thanksgiving until I confessed about my post-Thanksgiving cheesesteak. ;)
Thanksgiving was awesome! I prepared, brought food I could eat, and loaded my plate up with carrots, asparagus, broccoli, green beans, snap peas, and a little turkey. It was SO GOOD! I brought my Mrs. Dash with me, (I put that stuff on EVERYTHING!) so the food had plenty of flavor, and I didn't feel like I missed out one bit!
Even better- I didn't feel like crap after eating. While everyone was drooping from triptophan and over-eating comas, I had energy and felt satisfied, but not sick. :)
It was an awesome feeling.
I am so very thankful. For so many things. :)

I cheated.
There. I said it. :)
Made it through Thanksgiving dinner, dessert, and eating out twice while Black Friday shopping like a boss! (Post to come on that.) I was beyond excited/happy/proud at how well I ate and the great choices I made.
And then there was Julio's. :/ lol For the three peeps who actually might read this, my family goes to Pennsylvania for most holidays. While there, it is a necessity to stop by Julio's (a cheesesteak place near my grandparents house) for a "steak-in-a-pouch."
Steak-in-a-pouch: a little piece of heaven consisting of REAL steak (steak-ems has NOTHING on this bad boy) lots of cheesy goodness, green peppers, and onions, wrapped in REAL Philly bread.
It is GIGANTIC. Couple that with a side of cheese fries with that bright orange cheese sauce that probably doesn't even HAVE real cheese in it... holy cow it's just fatty heaven.
Sorry...got side tracked for a minute. :)
So anywho, I was totally kickin holiday dieting's buns when it happened- my dad suggested Julio's for dinner. As soon as he mentioned it, I knew I was a goner. This was going to happen.
I honestly fought myself internally for a good 45 minutes over it.
"I've been doing SO GOOD!! I can't ruin it now!"
"There is no way I can watch everyone eat Julio's and not have some."
"You've stuck to every 'rule' of this diet to the T for five weeks. This is the longest you have ever stuck to a diet. One slip, and all of this could be over. Do you REALLY want to risk all that hard work?!"
"I'll just work out harder and go right back to the diet after this. This one cheat does not define me. It does not mean I've failed. I will regret not getting it and feel deprived, resenting the diet. I don't want that to happen. I'll have a steak-in-a-pouch with green peppers and onions and cheese fries, please. :D"
And you know what? I don't regret a thing. :) When I woke up this morning, I jumped right back into my usual healthy eating, I'm planning on going to the gym and running a bit when I get home, and I won't let this make me feel guilty or like I've failed. :) And that, my friends, is growth.
I didn't use this as an excuse to blow all of the hard work I've done out of the water. I didn't wallow in my "failure"- or even consider it a failure. No guilt or shame. I made a choice, I enjoyed it (I'm not even gonna lie- it was everything I had hoped for. lol) and I'm gonna keep it moving.
I have a goal. And I will reach it. :)
Baby steps. ;)

Too true. :) They have a mind of their own!
PS-I swear I WILL start posting real posts SOON! Took a lil' Thanksgiving break. :)

Power in numbers
I always hear that working out with friends has a higher success rate than working out alone. That meeting someone at the gym makes you feel obligated, and more likely to push yourself to go on days you don't feel like it.
Turns out- "they" (whoever "they" are) are right!! Not only do I feel more drive to go, I also am more excited to workout, and have more fun when I go!
When you make the gym a social occasion as opposed to an obligation, it really makes a big difference on your view of the gym!
I now have some girlies that meet up with me once a week for Zumba, as well as a friend who often goes with me Saturday mornings to bodypump. (I REALLY need a friend for that class- it is at EIGHT FIFTEEN in the morning on a SATURDAY!!! lol)
I'm still looking for some more gym buddies! I was hesitant at first, because I'm vain and self-conscious and don't want friends to see me practically dying while working out. Turns out- it's not that big of a deal. :)
Anyone wanting to join me at the gym? ;)

Suck it in!
I had some great advice given to me during a bodypump class a long time ago. She mentioned how important it is (if you want a flat stomach) to keep your ab muscles tight all the time, not just when you're doing an an routine. It doesn't matter what workout you're doing, if your abs are pulled in tight you will strengthen them as well!
I was skeptical at first, but I have to admit it's working! I even have the start of abs!!! They're flabby abs so far, but I'm seein definition already!
In have a really hard time doing crunches right now. My core is really weak and my back is on fire even after roughly 5 sit-ups/crunches. In order to make my core and back strong enough to handle crunches, I've started "pulling my belly button towards my spine" (that's how one of the bodypump teachers puts it) all the time. :)
Now, whenever I'm walking around at work, taking the stairs, or working out at the gym, I tighten up those core muscles!
It's one more little thing that, done over time, has actually made a difference! :)

Beginning
Allowing myself to be a beginner. To be the biggest girl in the gym class. To be the only one unable to finish the reps.
Allowing myself to be ok with not being the best. Because one day...I will be. :)
Zumba
I have wanted to give Zumba a try for a long time. The problem? I can't dance.
I wanted to maybe get one of the videos or something and give it a shot. That way I didn't have to embarrass myself in front of a bunch of people. I could just do it at home. However, knowing how I am and how I just can't bring myself to workout at home when my couch is calling my name, I knew it would be a waste of money.
I had heard from friends what a great workout it was, and that it was a really fun way to exercise, so I woman-ed up. (The chica version of manning up.) I walked in that class of skinny mamas to shake a chunky tail feather.
At the beginning of every class at the gym I go to, they always ask if there's anyone new. I contemplated not raising my hand. But, I've learned when you admit you're new, everyone is very supportive and encouraging, giving you tips and all. Plus- let's face it, they don't expect as much from you, which is nice. ;)
The instructor was awesome! She was so FUN!! (Sister could really shake it too!!) She said the rules were:
1. There are no mistakes.
2. If you get lost, just shake your booty till you figure it out. :)
My friends were definitely right! I had SO much fun! I had to make it a point to not look at myself in the giant wall mirrors or I'd get all self conscious and weird. As long as I didn't look, and didn't compare myself to the other booty shakers, I had a GREAT time!
It's really done more for me than just exercise. (Don't get me wrong- I come outta that class sweating like a big dog. It's one of the hardest workouts I've done!!) It helps me let loose and relax. It reminds me not to take myself so seriously. Helps me not compare myself to others.
I love it! It's so much fun, such a good work out, and I actually look forward to it each week! :)
If you ever get the opportunity, I'd definitely give it a shot! :)

Goals
This is the dress I have to wear June 1st, 2013. It's gorgeous and I love it, but Im freaking out at the straplessness and the shortness. If all goes as planned *fingers crossed* I will have reached my first goal weight by this date. :) Here's to getting a rockin body to look fabulous in this awesome dress!
Thinspiration
I started a new class at the gym today!
I started the day with a pylometrics/ cardio class, then took Zumba! (More to come on Zumba!)
One woman from the first class stayed to do Zumba too. There was a little time between classes, so we got to talking.
I complimented her on how hard she worked out. This lady was a champion. Everything she did she did 150%, pushing herself harder each round. She started to explain a little of her story.
"I used to be 210 pounds," she explained.
It blew my mind!!! This woman looks like one of those ladies who have just been blessed with good genes. In my mind, she had been skinny all her life, and working out came easier to her than it ever would for me. Flat stomach, strong and toned- surely she wouldn't understand what it was like for me. Oh, how I misjudged her!!
"I started out just doing jazzercise, then slowly pushed myself harder. I hate fad diets. You lose the weight quickly, then as soon as you stop you gain all the weight back! I've learned that the slower it comes off, the longer it will stay off."
I truly believe God put us in the class together to help me hear what He's been trying to tell me. "Slow and steady wins the race. Don't be discouraged- if you push through the plateaus and the pounds put back on, if you keep trying and taking it day by day, you WILL see results!" Thanks God, you're pretty fantastical. ;)
She said it took her a little over a year. I know she has absolutely no idea how much just our one little chat has inspired and encouraged me.
I just love little gifts like that.

I don't want to be skinny
I was walking on the treadmill yesterday, admiring the eye candy lifting weights. ;) Then I noticed this girl walk up to the weights.
She was clearly fit, but as soon as she started lifting you could see- girlie was RIPPED.
You could see every muscle in her shoulders/back. She looked strong, but not bulky or manly.
It reminded me- I don't want to be skinny. Yes, I'd like to weigh less. Sure, I'd like to be a little smaller. But I want to be strong. I don't want to be thin and frail- I want to be muscular and tone.
I want to be able to lift heavy stuff! :) I want to feel independent, not needing someone to lift or carry heavy things for me. :) I want to be able to hold my own with the boys, and yet still feminine enough to wear a dress without lookin like a cross dresser.
So no, I don't want to be skinny- I want to be STRONG!

Yoga
I had my first experience with yoga yesterday. I worked Sunday night (until 8am Monday morning) so I was a little sleepy going in. (NOT a good choice.)
I ran a little before going in. (Also, not a good choice.) It's a little hard to get all peaceful and tranquil when you smell like a wet dog. I think today I will do yoga first, workout second. :)
I walked in late. :/ All of the lights were off, so I thought the class hadn't started yet. I went up front to ask the girl if they were still having the class, and she explained that the entire class is in the dark. No lights. After being awake for over 24 hrs. Being told to relax...it's really quite amazing I didn't just take a nap. :)
I quietly grabbed a yoga mat and jumped in.
Despite being a relaxing class focused on strength and stretching, the instructors voice was harsh and she yelled as if there were loud music playing or a large number of people in the room. (There were four of us.)
It was harder than I expected. Despite being a big girl, I'm pretty flexible. So I thought I'd be fine. Then, the woman asked us to lay down, bend our knees and put our heels to our butts, GRAB THEM, and stretch. I did it, but I imagine the look on my face was HILARIOUS! Some things she asked us to do just wasn't gonna happen. I actually got a look from the instructor when, after she explained a particularly ridiculous move, I went, "PFFFT!" Like, YEAH RIGHT!
The class ends by laying however you feel comfortable, and relaxing in complete silence. It took everything in me to not fall asleep, fearing I'd start snoring like a chainsaw.
It wasn't a horrible experience... She said a bunch of words I didn't understand regarding the different positions, and the talk of self-healing and chakras freaked me out a little... But it wasn't bad enough to not try again. I felt pretty awesome after. My skin everywhere felt tingly- like it had woken up. That was neat.
So, here's to trying new things!

I am GREAT at dieting!
I can not count the number of diets i have been through in my 27 years. The earliest diet I an remember was around 15 years old.
I'm really pretty great at diets! Well, what I really mean is I am great at STARTING diets. I get motivated, even a little excited to start a new one! I'm hopeful, eager to drop pounds and become healthier.
The first week or so into a diet I usually drop weight very rapidly. I realize most of this weight is water weight I've retained, but it's still thrilling to see the numbers on the scale decline so quickly!
Then, every time, usually around about 185-186 pounds it happens. I plateau. Big time. A week, even two may go by without even one pound lost! I even may start gaining a pound or two back, despite still strictly sticking to the diet.
It is BEYOND FRUSTRATING!! I feel hopeless, like no matter how hard I try I will never be thin.
This is where I usually give up. I get angry at my body and punish it with pizza, soda, and more cookies than you could shake a stick at.
There was one diet I actually got through the initial plateau. The Herbalife shake diet got me to about 180, but I got so sick of the shakes I would literally start gagging even if I THOUGHT about making a shake. Turns out I was allergic to them. :/
So this is the scary part for me. I have pushed through the first plateau (I know there will be more to come) and I'm slowly but surely continuing to lose weight. I don't want to give up, get bored, or get frustrated and quit. I've worked too hard and for too long (50 days!) to give up now.
What's good (and unusual) is that I don't want to. I'm not bored with the food, it's not making me feel sick or deprived, and I actually feel great!
So, I'm hoping to one day be able to say (instead of dieting) I am GREAT at eating healthy!! ;)

Little Victories
This weekend was great! I got to celebrate my dad's birthday with him, join some awesome ladies at church to hang out, hear a beautiful woman talk about Jesus and how awesome He is, and just relax!
Two big this happened this week:
1. I went out to a restaurant for the first time since starting this diet. Honestly, I was really nervous! We went to Texas Roadhouse. Here's what I usually get:
-appetizer of some fried awesomeness. (Usually pickles or an onion blossom)
-dinner is a steak, a fully loaded sweet potato packed with caramel sauce and marshmallows!!! And apple sauce.
-If I can still breathe/move, I will split some dessert with whoever I'm eating with.
Then I'd roll myself out of the booth, go into a food coma and go to bed.
YIKES! I'd hate to even know what that meal did to my body.
This time, I had:
-No appetizer.
-Steak, with a side of mixed veggies and a side of green beans.
It was delicious, and I didn't feel sick OR guilty when I left! Huge win.
THEN- Sunday we had a "ladies tea" at church. Some amazing tastefully simple ladies I know made a HUGE assortment of all things TS. (seriously- this stuff is fool proof to make, AND tastes UH. MAZING.) Luckily, for once in my life I thought ahead. Knowing I would have some serious temptations sitting right in front of me, I ate a lil' somethin before I left so I wouldn't be starving, and I packed my breakfast in a lunchbox so I had things on hand I could eat.
All in all, I feel pretty darn fantastic about the choices I made, and it feels good to get a win in every now and then.
I still gained two pounds (AGAIN) which only further proves my theory that I can gain weight by LOOKING at unhealthy food, but I made the right choices. And I know if I continue to do so, the weight will come off.

GRRRRRRR!!!
I gained the two pounds back. Again. Dropped the f-bomb like the classy, God-fearing woman that I am. :/ BLAH.
I can't seem to get past 186. I need to get my tail in the gym.
There. I posted. That's all for today.

Cranky Pants
I just wanted to take a few minutes and apologize to my family, friends, coworkers, and random strangers- all of whom I've lashed out at these past few weeks.
I have been a total crabby pattie. HUGE mood swings, bouts of anger for no apparent reason, coming extremely close to bursting into tears at random times throughout my day. Sorry bout all that. ;)
It could be 1,000 things. Weather change always screws with me, hormones, job bein silly, not movin to Mexico, singleness gettin to me- could be all of it combined for all I know.
I was trying to figure out how to bust out of this funk, when it hit me-with this diet I can no longer find comfort in food anymore. I can't eat my feelings away. I can't hide behind mountains of food to make me happy now.
So yes- a lot of craziness can be goin on. But before trying to eat healthy, I could always find solace in comfort food. Plans don't work out? An entire box of Mac-n-Cheese, please! (And it better be Kraft, or things WILL get ugly!) Bad day at work? I'll take 2 servings of dinner, cookies, cake, chips, and 3 sodas, thank you. (Not kidding-this happened more than I would like to admit.) Interested in a guy who just isn't diggin me? Don't worry- I'll just call up my old friend Chipotle and eat until I explode. (BTW- if chipotle served dessert you would literally have to roll me out of that joint.)
It sounds silly, and quite sad really, but I feel almost as if I've been through a break-up. What I found comfort, joy, calm, and happiness from is no longer there. Learning how to eat-to-live when I've spent my life living-to-eat is much more of an emotional roller coaster than I expected.

It's the little things...
So after already shedding a few pounds and having some small victories, I wanted to make a YAY! list, and a YAY-for-things-to-come! list. :)
Here's the things I've already noticed:
(WARNING! Some [probably all] of these may be a TMI)
-my doo-blay (as I so lovingly call my double chin) is getting smaller!
-My pants are actually starting to sit on my waist, instead of hiking them up under my boobs so I don't have belly overhang. (I warned you.)
-my underpants don't roll down under my gut if I take the stairs!
-I went down a notch on my watch! (Next stop-belt notch!)
-My thighs aren't trying to bust out of my pants!
As to what I'm looking forward to:
-Having jeans/scrub pants without holes in the thighs from where my chunky legs have rubbed holes through them. (Yep.)
-Not jutting out my head like a crane to prevent eight chins from magically appearing every time my picture is taken.
-Being able to shop in an age appropriate underwear store. Granny panties just aren't cute, friends. ;)
-Being able to go up two flights of stairs without feeling like I'm gonna stroke out.
-Not running every time a camera appears.
-Not knocking things over because "I can fit through there" turns into "I can fit through there- if my wide tail knocks everything off this table."
-Workin' out without screaming obscenities in my head. (Sorry Jesus- it's the truth.)
And long term goals:
-Wearing a baiting suit without feeling like a beached whale.
-No longer shopping in the "plus sized" section (Bee Tee Dub- can we please call it something else?! "Plus sized" sounds like a regular person PLUS another one could fit in my jeans.)
-Not fearing activities with friends that require physical exertion, a weight limit, or small areas.
So there are a few of my goals. I'm sure the list will grow as some get checked off the list, and I begin to find out what my body can actually do. :)

Stupid scale.
I gained two pounds. :P
I was at a child's birthday party, full of ice cream cake (my ULTIMATE favorite) , pizza, and all the things that are HUGE temptations for me. I did not have a single bite. I packed my lunch. I made good choices. I still gained two pounds. This, in my mind, only reiterates my thought that I can literally LOOK at unhealthy food and gain weight. :)
This weight gain got to me. Yes, it's only two pounds. No, it shouldn't have gotten to me. Yesterday, I felt thinner, excited, and hopeful. Those two pounds sent me into this silly hopeless spiral. The usual self-deprecating thoughts began. "I will always be overweight." "I can't do this." "I will always be a 'big girl.'" It. Is. Silly. I did exactly what I said I wouldn't do- I let the scale determine my worth.
Those two pounds could have been anything. I weighed myself at a different time of day than I usually do. I retained water yesterday (not sure why). It could be 1,000 different things that don't matter. Instead of celebrating making it through a tempting situation without wavering, I beat myself up because of the numbers on that stinkin' scale.
I refuse to give up this time. I refuse to let those numbers determine how I feel that day. I am working hard, and WILL see results.
It's amazing to me how I have to outwardly fight the natural thoughts in my head. But I'll get there. :)

Meal Planning
I am still in the process of trying to figure out what works for me as far as meal planning goes. (Any tips/tricks/hints would be GLADLY welcomed!!)
I started to make a very general meal plan to determine how much food I needed to buy. The first time I did a two week plan, but I think it was too overwhelming and will probably switch to a one-week plan.
This past week I didn't plan my meals and I'm regretting it now. I don't have enough of some things to get me through the week, and now have to lose sleep to go to the store. And I LOOOOOVE sleep. :)
I think meal plans are important, mainly so you can stay prepared. You can have food on hand to conquer cravings, and never have to "wing it" and end up making less than stellar choices because there was no option.
I'll be glad to figure out what works for me and get into a meal planning groove. This may also help me with budgeting for my food, which has been difficult with this diet- considering it requires a lot of meat.
Kombucha
A friend suggested to me a while ago that I should try kombucha. It's a tea that is fermented, full of probiotics and antioxidants. It's supposed to be great for gut health, gives you energy, and has a lot of great nutrients.
I was hesitant to try it at first, but now I can't go without it!
It's pretty expensive (about $3.00/16 oz. bottle) to buy in the store, so I searched online to try to find a way to make it on my own! :)
To take a peek at the directions I followed, go to this site.
Here's what you need:
-1 (16 oz.) bottle of raw, organic, unpasturized/unflavored kombucha (I found it at our "natural store" but I've also found it at Safeway a little cheaper)
-1 gallon glass jar
-1 gallon spring/distilled water
-6 to 8 green or black tea bags (I used green)
-1 cup granulated white sugar
-Steel stock pot
-Wooden spoon
-Coffee filter
-Rubber band
Steps:
1. Bring 1/2 gallon of the distilled water to a boil in a large, steel stock pot.
2. When it boils, turn off the heat and add the tea bags.
3. Cover the pot and let the tea steep for 15 minutes.
4. After 15 minutes, remove the tea bags.
5. Add the sugar and stir well with a wooden spoon until completely dissolved.
6. Cover the pot and let it sit until room temperature.
7. Once at room temperature, poor the cooled tea into the glass jar. (Be sure the jar is VERY clean to prevent mold.)
8. Add the 16 oz. of kombucha.
9. Add the rest of the distilled water, being sure to leave at least 2 inches of space between the tea and the top of the jar to allow the SCOBY (Symbiotic Colony of Bacteria and Yeast- sounds gross, looks gross, but makes some good tea!)
11. Set the jar in a place that won't get disturbed, and doesn't get direct sunlight.
12. After 2-3 weeks, you should see a thin, translucent film covering the surface of the tea. (This picture was take after about a week and a half)
See the beginning of the SCOBY growing? :)
This is the bottom. It's hard to get a decent picture, but it's starting to grow!
I hope this helps! As the SCOBY grows, I'll be taking more pictures and filling you in on how it's going!

Side note: Skinny people love stairs
One "rule" of this diet is that you can no longer take elevators/escalators. I think I had already mentioned that I had I started taking the stairs at work.
After a little over a week doing this, I've noticed a pattern. Skinny people LOVE stairs! (Ok, maybe they don't LOVE them.) Almost every time I'm taking the stairs, I come across another employee also climbin. And almost every single person I run across in the stairwell is skinny!
The Dukan diet suggests small things to do each day that can gradually make you start losing weight. Taking the stairs. Drinking only water and coffee/tea with zero calorie sweetener. Parking further away and walking. And...taking the stairs. They're all small life changes that, in the long run, make a big difference.
Yes, I am out of breath by the time I make it up one flight. Yes, my thighs are on fire when I get to where I'm going. But it wont kill me. And it's a little step to make a big change.

Self-image
I am learning (ever so slowly) the power of a positive self-image, and what kind of destruction a negative one can play in your life.
There will always be things I'd like to change. Even when I reach that final goal weight, I am sure there will be something that bugs me about my body. Some "flaw" or feature I can't stand that I will want to beat myself up for.
I am my hardest critic. In some ways, it is a good thing. It helps me push forward and drives me to become a little better everyday. But sometimes...most times... I can be so hard on myself that I'd rather just quit.
I am starting to reshape my mind, as well as my body this time. Cutting out negative self-talk, detrimental thoughts, and starting to rethink about the way I see myself.
I am often the girl who makes a joke about her weight, jumping in and making myself the punch line before someone else gets a chance to do it. I'd like to think I've got a good sense of humor, and I love to make people laugh, but it's about time I stop using my bad self image and weight as the butt of every joke.
I'm attempting to get rid of any negative-ness in my thoughts about myself. No more twisting a compliment I get into something less than flattering. (Ex. Random friend/coworker: "Kelli, I love that shirt!" Me: "Thanks! Big girls LOVE their sweaters!! Hides all the rolly-pollies!!"
No more "big girl" comments. No more beating myself up about my weight/size/abilities.
Instead, I'm switching it up! Focusing on what I like about myself instead of what I hate. Thinking about how far I have come instead of how much further I have to go. Being proud of my accomplishments (even little ones!) instead of constantly reliving failures. Finding things I love about myself (no matter how small) instead of constantly zeroing in on the things I hate. Motivating myself through positivity ("I can do this!" actually helps me when I work out to push just that little bit harder.) instead of being obsessed with negative thoughts.
It's amazing how, even if you feel silly or feel like you don't mean it at first, saying positive things to yourself really does start to begin to change how you feel!
I started out with the stranger test. If I wouldn't walk up to a stranger and say it, I need to stop saying it to myself! For example, never in a million years would I say, "You can't wear that shirt. It makes you look like you have eight chins." Or, "Look at all those rolls!! You opening up a bakery?!" But I say things like that all the time to myself. Now, when I catch myself doing that, I am starting to try to say something positive instead. Immediately finding something I like about myself and celebrating it.
Might sound cliche or cheesy, but it's working, so I'm keeping it. ;)

Addiction
Hello. My name is Kelli, and I am an addict.
Phew! I feel better already. They always say the first step is admitting you have a problem.
People may argue, feeling like using the word "addiction" regarding food is an excuse, or belittles "real" addictions, like drugs or alcohol. I beg to differ.
I have always felt like I have an addictive personality. (And no- I don't mean that by meeting me once you're hooked on Kelli for life.) Honestly, it is only by the grace of God that I am not hookin' on the street for crack money. I am easily persuaded (trying to fix this-people pleasing has its downfalls), and have honestly put myself in situations in the past that could've easily brought on a "lady of the night" lifestyle. Praise God, that didn't happen.
All that being said, if it can in any way shape or form become addictive, and I've tried it, it's over-I'm hooked.
Many know I've struggled off an on for about 9 years with smoking cigarettes. (Bear with me- this is related to weight loss.) It sucks. Wanting so badly to quit, knowing with every cig I'm puffin' on I'm slowly killing myself, working in a hospital and seeing the results of what smoking does- and still puffin away. Being chained to something sucks.
I'm saying all of this because I get addiction. Right now, it's that annoying "friend" who, although toxic, you just can't seem to cut out of your life. You fight, you stop talking for a little bit- but you always come back.
For me, food is also an addiction. The definition for addiction is: A persistent, compulsive dependence on a behavior or substance.
-I would go through a drive through, order enough food for two people, then eat some on the way home so my family didn't realize I had bought so much.
-I would feel compelled to lie to the cashier. "Oh, my sister wanted dinner too." Then shovel it in my pie hole when no one was looking.
-Before going to a friends house, I would eat, knowing I'd eat there also. I just didn't want them to know how much I actually consumed.
-At work, I would fill my tray to the point of people actually making comments regarding how much food I got. When addressed, I either lied and said some was for a coworker, or said I was bringing food home for tomorrow. Only to then run to my office, shut the door, and eat as fast as I could.
-I would eat in my car to avoid people knowing how much I ate.
-I hid food in the office and at home and hoarded it.
Hiding my eating habits, hiding how much food I'm consuming, and feeling ashamed is addiction.
Here's the problem with food addiction: You can't. Stop. Eating. It's not like I could just "give it up." (Not saying quitting anything is easy. Trust me-I know.) Imagine an alcoholic who, to live, had to have three beers a day- but only three.
I'm not making excuses. I'm not explaining why I'm fat. I'm trying to shed a little light for those who are NOT addicted to food. It's not cute or funny to hand me candy, cookies, chips or the like when I'm eating healthy. It's not amusing to have you eat something that is a temptation for me, while you exclaim "MmmmmmMMMM!!! This is SOOOO GOOD!! You should try this!" You may think its hilarious-I want to punch you in the teeth, grab your candy, and run!
You wouldn't taunt an alcoholic with beer. You wouldn't shake a bottle of Percocet at a narcotic addict...quit trying to tempt me and see if I fail.
Ok, I'm done. :) Just had to throw that out there.

Any diet works.
By request from a few friends, I'm going to post details regarding the Dukan Diet- the lifestyle change (I hate the word diet) I'm currently doing.
Before doing this though, I wanted to make something very clear.
Any. Diet. Will. Work.
There is no magical button to push to lose weight. There is no special 100% flawless book to read, food to buy, or exercise program to follow that will make you shed pounds and keep them off with little to no effort.
It takes work.
It takes planning.
It takes willpower.
It takes effort.
It takes fighting every meal, every self destructive thought... Deciding that being healthy is more important than indulging an addiction that will bring a second of satisfaction.
Making a change and alter your mindset regarding food. That's the only way.
I chose the Dukan diet because I feel it works best for me personally. That doesn't mean it'll work for you. You have to listen to your body, realize your pit falls, and commit to changing the way you view food, exercise, and your body.

Weddings
So I went to a wedding last night. It was SO great. The bride was beautiful, the wedding was gorgeous, and it was such a fun time! :)
I was quite worried about what I was going to eat while there. The phase of the diet I am on (more to come on that in a later post) is rather restrictive, and I was afraid that without having my meal pre-planned, I wouldn't have the self-control to make good choices.
I made sure to eat as soon as I woke up, and had two small snacks prior to leaving for the church. I kept water on hand, and kept full and well hydrated. I packed a lunch with some snacks, and made sure I ate right before the ceremony so I wasn't starving by the reception.
When it was time to get dinner, I was still ok! It was even a buffet- a chunky chick lacking self-control's nightmare! I was satisfied since I had eaten a few hours earlier, so when my time came I chose chicken and green beans.
It may sound like nothing to people that don't have to constantly fight their inner fat girl, but for me- this was huge. I didn't make excuses! I didn't justify horrible food choices simply because it was a special occasion. I enjoyed my meal, was satisfied (and not sick), and had no guilt. This is a good feeling! :)

Eat slower
I absentmindedly eat. I'll eat while watching TV, eat while checking Facebook, eat while working...You get the idea. Truth is, I don't ever sit down to just eat. I'm trying to change this.
By sitting down and simply eating, I've noticed a change. I eat less, but enjoy my food more.
By simply concentrating on what I'm eating, and not mindlessly shoving whatever is in front of me in my mouth, I actually enjoy my food. I feel satisfied much more quickly, and in return need less food. It's a little change that's been making a big difference!

Excuses, excuses!
I have a bunch of excuses as to why I don't diet/exercise. Wanna hear 'em? Good! But, since I'm also trying to change my mindset regarding how I view diet/exercise, I am also going to remind myself why these aren't really excuses at all. :D
-I work nights (11pm-7am)
*You only work 8hrs a night. You work the same amount of hours a week as any full time employee. They can make working out work- SO CAN YOU!
-I'm tired!
*Exercise and eating right GIVES YOU ENERGY.
-We have unhealthy food in the house.
*NO ONE is putting it in your mouth!
-Eating healthy/exercising is time consuming.
*So, you'll miss a few reruns of a show you've seen 1,000 times. I think you'll live. That's why we have DVR.
-It's expensive.
*Not really. Grocery shopping may be one big spend a week, but it's better than fast food all the time. It's cheaper in the long run. (Staying off heart medicine and diabetes medicine because you're healthy is cheaper too!)
-It's inconvenient. I can't hang out with my friends.
*Stop it. If you think ahead, plan your meals, and bring healthy snacks, you'll be fine.
-It's about to be the holidays!! No WaWa gobblers?!
*You'll live. Make smart choices. You can make it through the holidays just fine if you make smart choices. You don't have to eat lettuce while your family stuffs themselves. Portion size and healthy choices are key.
So, now that you've watched my inner dialogue/argument, and subsequently realized I'm a little nutty... There is NO EXCUSE for accepting unhealthiness.

Binge eating
I have a habit of waiting WAY to long to eat, then eating everything in sight until I feel sick. (No, I don't purge) On an average day, unless I make a conscious effort to eat, I can wake up at 7am, and forget to eat until around at least 4:00pm when I am STARVING. Then I will literally sit down and consume my entire days worth of calories in one sitting-and then some. My poor body.
I have found though, if I make it a point to eat within an hour of waking up, I will get hungry again. I'm actually learning the difference between hungry and starving, and also the difference between satisfied and sickeningly full.
I'm attempting to learn the discipline of eating small meals every 3 hours or so, instead of eating huge meals. I feel a big difference. I don't get the "hunger over" feeling from food when I eat this way. I don't want to instantly go to sleep. Food actually becomes energizing. Like it's supposed to be.
I'm learning to see the signs of being hungry. For me, I don't feel it in my stomach until I'm starving, so I can't wait for that. Before that, I get tired. Weak. I get cranky. Learning these signs has helped me in HUGE ways!
I usually felt exhausted most of the time. I blamed it on weird sleeping patterns, odd work shifts...but in truth, I was attempting to keep my body going without giving it anything. I've heard the analogy that your body is like a car-it can't run without fuel-plenty of times. It's just now becoming real to me. So that's pretty awesome.
My work/life schedule sometimes requires (1-2 times a week) that I stay up for 24 hours in a row. Yesterday was a perfect example. I had Sunday night off, so I slept from 10pm-6am like a normal person. I went about my day, telling myself I'd take a nap in the evening. Then evening came. Along with the evening came cooking meals for the week, giving my dog a bath (this was absolutely necessary), doing laundry, etc. Then the evening was gone. No nap. I was nervous, because unable to take a nap, I then had to head to work from 11pm-7am. Normally, I would be so exhausted I could barely stay awake. I was tired, don't get me wrong! I'm gettin' too old for all-nighters! BUT- since I planned my meals and ate something small every 3 or so hours, my metabolism stayed up, and I wasn't nearly as exhausted as I usually am.
So, I think I'm liking this whole eating right thing! lol Let's hope I can retain these little life lessons. :D

Baby steps
I'm trying to make this weightloss goal a lifelong one. I have struggled with my weight since I was in high school. I was VERY thin as a child, but somewhere along the line my metabolism decided to stop dead in its tracks. My eating habits didn't though. I ate like I was getting paid per bite. Food has always been a comfort to me. I eat when I'm happy, wen I'm sad, stressed, frustrated, worried...you get the idea.
So, in hoping this diet isn't a "diet", but rather a lifestyle change, I've started a little slower. Rather than hitting the gym 6 days a week and eating salads with no dressing for every meal, I've taken little steps in the beginning that are actually making a difference.
Here's what I've done so far:
-I drink at least 72 oz. of water a day
(I can actually feel a difference- my body starts yelling at me if I don't have this now)
-I use the myfitnesspal app on my phone to keep track of calories. Try it-it's awesome! If you have an iPhone (not sure it works on others) you can scan the barcode of what you're eating and it puts all the info in for you!) Follow me! KellBell925
-I have stopped drinking sodas, teas, and juice that are basically straight up sugar. I never realized how many calories I was getting simply through what I drank.
-I've been taking the stairs at work and parking further away. (Since I get to work at 11pm, this is even more exercise since I am a big chicken and basically RUN to the door.)
-I am eating "breakfast" within an hour of waking up everyday. (my "breakfast" is at around 4pm...) I have found this actually wakes me up a lot faster and I feel much less lethargic in starting my day.
-I stopped using coffee creamer. This was the hardest. I honesty used at out 1/4 creamer for an 8oz cup of coffee. I didn't like the taste of coffee- but I LOVE caffeine. :) Although it wasn't my favorite at first, it only took a few days to get used to. Now I actually enjoy my morning coffee with 1tbsp of Truvia in it! (can't do black just yet.)
Simply by doing these small things I have already lost ten pounds In about two weeks! (I was over 200lbs before starting this blog... :/) So onto the next challenge: finding a diet and exercise program that won't break the bank and is something I can do for life. :D
KellBell925

Gettin healthy
The idea of me writing a blog about eating healthy and in shape, right now, seems a tad ridiculous. However, I'm hoping weeks, months, even years from now, I'll look back on this and say, "See?! You weren't crazy!! You CAN do this!!"
I'm looking to write this blog for a few reasons-
*I wanna change the phrase, "Kelli works out?" to, "Kelli WORKS OUT!!"
*I'd like my clothes to actually fit.
*I'd like to not wake up every morning completely exhausted, regardless how much sleep I get.
*I have really bad acne, and (since I've tried EVERYTHING else) I'm pretty sure it's diet related. I'm tired of looking like I'm struggling through puberty.
*I'd like to have something to look back on. To see it may not always be easy, but it will ALWAYS be worth it.
*I want kids. And I want to have my kids not look back at a childhood where their mother was too fat, lazy, tired, etc to play with them.
*I'd like to be able to show those struggling right along side me that it's possible.
*The bible says to treat your body as a temple. It's supposed to be a holy place, and I'm treating mine like a garbage disposal. It's not honoring God, and it's making me miss out on opportunities to get closer to Him and to minister to others. That's gotta stop.
There are 1,000 more reasons, but we'll get to those later. ;)
It's gonna get ugly, folks. :) I will try my best to be completely transparent, showing every ugly step of the way. The good, victorious moments, and those times I really just feel like I suck at life. So bear with me. :)
As I start this blog, I am 5'5" and 195.2 pounds. (I hope y'all realize how badly I didn't want to type those numbers.) I don't plan on relying too much on the scale to measure my victory, seeing how I can be 200lbs and unhealthy, but I could be 120lbs and still not be giving my body what it needs. However, I do not want to stay at the weight I am, because it doesn't FEEL healthy.
Anywho, here we go! Wish me luck!
